Basayo Village is a housing development by the tribe located on Rohnerville Rd in Fortuna, CA around the back side of the town. It consists of 6 modular houses built by Hoopa Modular and three apartment buildings each housing four families; totaling up to 18 tribal families being provided with affordable shelter. This development provides shelter for its 18 families. The village also provides a neat playground for the younger children to play in with rubberized flooring that allows the children to play freely without causing stress to the parents about their safety. Basayo Status UpdateThe Basayo Village North Side housing project is complete!!! Twelve apartments and six single-family homes are now occupied by 17 happy Tribal families selected through the rating and ranking process in our Housing Policy. Those happy Tribal families include Valerie Robinson, Judith John, Roseann Thomas, Marcie Jake, Gail Keisner, Ryan Moon, Steven Martinez, Art Moon, Patricia Sears, Wayne Moon, Arlene Watson, Krissey Hanley, Dawnetta Carpenter, Luckky Fergison, Rhoda Thomas, Nicole Smith, and Margaret McGinnis. Congratulations to all!! There is still one more vacancy to be filled, and the family to fill that house will be selected at the next CBDO meeting at 11/21/07. With the completion of Basayo North, we’ve doubled our inventory of Tribally assisted housing. The project was completed with a combination of both federal and Tribal funds. Federal funds included $1,760,000 of Indian Community Development Block Grant (from awards for ICDBG 2002, 2003, and 2004), $200,000 from Indian Health Service, and another $200,000 from Indian Housing Block Grants. The Tribes share was a little more than $800,000. What a wonderful success to be able to help so many Tribal families for such a modest cost of Tribal funds!!! Earlier awards for ICDBG 2005 and 2006 will combine similarly with Indian Health Service, Indian Housing Block Grant, and Tribal funds to construct eight more apartments this coming year in our Basayo South project. Our current scheduling anticipates they will be complete and occupied by Tribal families before the end of 2008. We continue to accept applications for our Tribal housing. All applications we currently have on file are rated and ranked and placed on a Housing Waiting List in the event a vacancy arises. We will also use this Waiting List for tenant selection when Basayo South opens up next year. If you would like some help with your housing needs, please be sure your application is in!!!!
